Flower Power at Macy's

Other than a few intrepid crocuses, braving the below freezing temperatures (still!!), and a few early birds chirping now and again, there has been little evidence of springtime in my part of the world. At least, not outdoors. However, inside Macy's flagship store at Herald Square in New York, the aisles are blooming right now. On Thursday, I was in the store and snapped a few photos to share with Flattering50 readers. The spring flowers' vibrant colors took my breath away. Aren't they magnificent? It made me want to buy a spring dress in every color. (Hmmm. Do you think that's what the folks at Macy's are hoping?) Anyway. The annual flower show is a lovely event and I take my spring bonnet off to Macy's for once again creating an extraordinary display. Take a peek at the show's flower power below...

Women's Tops that Flatter and Cover

flattering top for over 50 women

My over 50 girlfriends and I often grumble about all the fashion trends—mini dresses and skirts, 7-inch heels, and cropped tops, to name a few—we can't wear. However, every so often, a trend comes along that makes me feel like writing a fan letter to its creator. For me, that was the case when the below-the waist, stretch denim jeans hit the fashion scene. After years of wearing “mommy pants,” it was a relief to pull on jeans that comfortably rested several inches below my waist and, because of the stretch, moved with me, not against me. However, there's a downside to my below-the-waist jeans: many of my tops barely cover the jean’s lower waistband. Hence, I’m constantly tugging at the top's hem to make sure none of my over 50 belly is exposed.

Recently, Pauline Durban, president and founder of Covered Perfectly, suggested I try one of her tops and write about the experience on Flattering50. As the brand's name implies, the tops are designed to offer women just the right coverage. It sounded promising. The top (above) arrived about a week ago and I'm ready to write my review. To view more tops, click either photo in this post; they're linked to the Covered Perfectly website. And if you like what you see, be sure to take advantage of the special offer for Flattering50 readers at the bottom of this post.

Flattering50 Giveaway: Topaz Pendant Necklace

Editor's Note: This Giveaway has now ended. Thanks to all of you who entered.

The folks at Anjolee, the Art of Jewelry would like to give one Flattering50 reader a Topaz Solitaire Pendant Necklace (above) from their collection of lovely diamond and gemstone jewelry. The 5mm topaz gemstone is set in a simple, yet sophisticated four-prong design with an 18-inch silver chain. The topaz’s icy blue color is on trend with this spring’s love affair with all things blue. The delicate necklace, which can be dressed up or down, will add spring sparkle to whatever you're wearing. And...it's the perfect piece for summer days and nights, when sizzling heat precludes the wearing of heavy jewelry. To learn more about Anjolee and this necklace giveaway, see below.

Arms Over 50: The Lace Look

lace top for women over 50

Lately, I've been writing about spring's new dresses. Not surprisingly, many of the warmer-weather styles are sleeveless. I know sleeveless tops and dresses are a "no no" for many women over 50. And it's super important to do what makes you feel comfortable. However, personally, I hate to pass on a gorgeous dress just because it's sleeveless. As mentioned earlier, I'd rather wear the sleeveless dress and "arm" myself with a cropped knit cardigan or jacket. Another flattering sleeveless dress solutions for women over 50 is the lace top.

Ronen Chen Sweater Giveaway

Editor's Note: This Giveaway has now ended. Thanks to all of you who entered. To view the current Flattering50 Giveaway, click here.

We're just days away from the first day of spring! To celebrate spring, the folks at Ronen Chen would like to give a cardigan (above) from the designer's New Arrivals collection to a Flattering50 reader. The Betsy Knit Cardigan has an open, double-layered front and handkerchief hem, which is both feminine and flattering. The cardigan's 3/4 sleeves and linen knit are perfect for the warmer weather on the way. The linen knit is dip dyed in either red or blue, which makes it a snap to layer with this season's tops and bottoms. All of these elements add up to a lovely spring layer for women over 50.

Power Print Dresses for Women Over 50

bold print dresses for women over 50

I'm a huge fan of dresses with bold prints on women over 50.  For most of us, our "demure days," when we might have worn petite prints, are in the past. Bold prints are spirited, confident--just like we are. This spring, there are lots of bold print designs and colors in women's fashions. For this post, I'm showing a sample of spring 2014 dresses. I "shopped my closet" for the photo above. Bold black and white prints and "fit and flare" dress styling are on trend, but my Banana Republic dress is several years old. Scroll down for dresses online now.

Dress Zest: Spring 2014 Dresses to Brighten Your Day

Jones New York Print Jersey Sheath Dress

Editor's Note: As always, I have included different dress styles and sleeve lengths, including sleeveless, because women over 50 differ greatly in terms of body shape and arms. Vive la différence! PS. Whenever possible, I've included the dress's length.

I'm longing for signs of spring. Aren't you? However, I don't imagine there will be any signs here in the Northeast for another month or so. To tie me over until the mocking birds return and the spring buds start to bloom, I like to check out the spring fashion trends and dream of wearing something, well, springy. Right now, I'm thinking a new spring frock might be just the thing after a long winter. I'm happy to report there are spring dresses in a wide ranges of colors, from sophisticated neutrals to energizing blasts of color. I've collected flattering dress styles for women over 50 in this spring's hottest colors. And all of the dresses are under $150!
