The Denim Shirt: Shaking Off Winter

This weekend, I went rooting through my wardrobe, looking for something that wasn’t heavy or dark. It's the end of February and I'm tired of wearing black turtlenecks and chunky sweaters. I'm ready to go lighter—lighter colors and lighter fabrics. I spotted one of my two denim shirts and thought: Perfect! The denim shirt’s long-sleeves and soft blue color (not black!) is a fun look for women over 50 and a great way to shake off the winter blues. Here’s how I’m styling my denim shirt…

2014 Swimsuits for Women Over 50

Longitude Blue Fabulous Surplice Swimsuit

Editor's Note: Looking for the latest swimsuit styles? Take a peek at my recent post, entitled, 2015 Swimsuits: 14 Trends and Where to Shop.

Whether you’re planning an escape from the snow and ice or considering a new swimsuit for the summer season, you’ll find lots of flattering designs for women over 50. Don’t be discouraged by some of the more revealing 2014 styles—cut-outs and peek-a-boo macramĂ©, lace or crocheting. There are subtle and sophisticated trends as well. What's more, swimsuit designers are taking advantage of all the latest fabrics that slim, flatten and conceal the body. Take, for instance, the Longitude Blue Fabulous Surplice Swimsuit (above) with built-in tummy control. Pssst! You can Take up to 30% off June 2014 new arrivals at swimsuitsforall.com now through July 5, 2014.

Here’s a look at some of my other favorite new swimsuit styles. I've yet to find a site showing over 50 women modeling swimsuits, but I’ve tried to use photos of bathing suits on women of average weight as much as possible. Warning: There are a few waifs.

New Day/New Outfit: Black Tie Time?

black tie and jacket for women over 50

I'm always amused by the things that inspire my "style of the moment." Over the weekend, I pulled out my Beatles memorabilia to write a post about the Beatles tribute last Sunday night. (If you missed that post, a few readers left comments with their fab Beatles memories.) As I looked at the old photos, I fell in love all over with the lads and their skinny black ties. I went hunting in my scarf drawer and found a tie, though not a particularly skinny one. For a lark (a word I heard during the British Invasion), I styled the tie with a white man-tailored shirt, a black blazer and black pants (above). Unfortunately, I look more like Karl Lagerfeld than one of the fab four.

Style Over 50: The Beatles’ Influence

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. To celebrate, CBS is airing “The Night That Changed America: A GRAMMY Salute to The Beatles” at 8 p.m. EST. I plan to watch because, well, once a Beatles fan, always a Beatles fan. In fact, it’s safe to say no other cultural icons have had a greater influence on my taste in music or taste in fashion than the Beatles.

Flurries and Furry Handbags

I'm sitting at my desk watching the most recent snowfall (7 inches so far!) and thinking: What a funny time of year it is! Everywhere I look, people are bundled up, trying to stay warm. And, yet, in the past week, I've received several clothing catalogs, filled with bright-colored spring dresses and tops, and even the latest swimsuit collections. Meanwhile, New York Fashion Week, which will showcase fashion designs for fall 2014, is just a few days away. My head is spinning. Should I write about what's on the street, what's in the catalogs or what's on the runway? Well, my tendency is to report what I'm seeing on the New York City streets. And that's fur, fur, FUR!

FUR-BRUARY
A couple of posts ago, I showed a fabulous DIY faux fur tote created by a Flattering50 reader and shared a few link to DIY faux fur handbag projects. I guess because fur is on my brain, I've also noticed some well-priced faux fur bags available. Take, for instance, this Juicy Couture Hollywood Hills Faux Fur Clutch ($128) (below)...

And there are several Adriene Landau faux fur bags for under $130 at Neiman Marcus Last Call.

Finally, here's a Runway Leopard Haircalf Small Reversible Clutch (originally $195, now $77.99) (below) from DKNY. This one is more hairy than furry, but I love the two leopard patterns. You can reverse the pattern when the mood strikes you.

Uniqlo Vest: A Great Back-Up Layer

down vest for women over 50

What a winter we're having here in the Northeast! We've been dashing through the snow for almost two weeks now largely because the temperature hasn't risen above freezing to melt the white stuff. While I love snow, I have no tolerance for temps that dip below 20 F. My Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Vest (above) is one of the biggest reasons I'm still smiling. It's cozy warm without adding a lot of bulk--the perfect combination for this over 50 woman's winter look.
