Style Over 50: The Statement Jacket

First, there were the statement necklaces with attention-grabbing designs that added pizzazz to any outfit, even a basic T-shirt and jeans. Then, a couple of years ago, statement skirts made with luxurious and/or textured fabrics, such as leather, lace and tulle, hit the fashion scene. With the arrival of slightly cooler weather in New York, I'm seeing more and more women--including women over 50--making a statement with a new garment: the short, lightweight jackets. Like the statement necklaces and skirts, the statement jacket is a great way to energize your look. Scroll down to see how these women are styling their statement jackets as well as some shopping resources.

WHAT MAKES A STATEMENT
This fall, women over 50 are stepping up their separates look with statement jackets. The jackets are hip-length and are either made with printed fabric...

I'm a huge fan of a statement separate (jacket or skirt) or a statement accessory (necklace, purse or shoes). However, I prefer to limit the statement to one piece at a time, keeping all the other parts of my outfit low-key. For example, I love the way this statement jacket in a bold print has been paired with a simple white pair of pants.

or leather...

In my mind, leather jackets always make a statement. However, this fall's trendy leather jackets are not the black leather moto jackets of last fall. (Don't get me wrong: I still love my black biker jacket.) This fall's statement jackets are distinctive because of their color. Rather than classic black or chocolate brown, I'm seeing leather jackets in all shades of grey, green and blue--to name a few. I love the creamy beige leather jacket above and the buttery soft leather jacket in pale green below. Here, the solid-color jackets beg for printed skirts, don't you think?

There are also fall statement leather jacket with decorative accents, like the covered buttons on the winter white leather jacket at the top of this post or the metal studs on the taupe leather below.
