Refresh Your Summer Look With A New Color

Tops for Women Over 50

Believe it or not, this weekend marks summer’s halfway point. It's not unusual for me to feel the urge to refresh my summer look around this time. Of course, the question is always: How? The simple answer I came up with was… Choose a garment in a color you don’t normally think of as a summer color. For me, that color is grey. I pulled out an elbow sleeve T-shirt from Banana Republic and paired it with a beige, gold, red and black paisley print skirt (above).

MIXING THE OLD IN NEW WAYS
All shades of grey are trending for fall. While I don’t consider myself a slave to trends—hardly!—I do find them inspiring at times. Trends often help me to find new ways of styling my old clothes. I bought the BR grey top, plus a grey sweater, during those massive semi-annual sales last month. I’d intended to save them for the fall and use them to style up my old wardrobe. Recently, however, as I picked through my wardrobe, looking for something to wear to lunch with one of my sons, I came upon the T-shirt and thought: Why wait?

Another trend that continues to inspire me is the mixing of patterns and colors in new ways. Not too long ago, the thought of pairing a grey top with a mostly beige and gold paisley print skirt (below) would have never crossed my mind. Now I find mixing things up a bit is striking and refreshing.

That said, I also like to go with the tried and true. I plan to pair my grey top with a white skirt (below) next time I wear it.
