Pick of the Day: The Little Black Dress

Ruffle Sheath Dress Sheath Dress (Black)

My closet hasn't been without a little black dress for 30 years. It's my fashion security blanket. While I may decide to buy something new or choose to wear something else in my wardrobe to an evening event, I love knowing I could always wear my little black dress. I spied the Ruffle Sheath Dress Sheath Dress (Black) above while I was researching another post and thought: "Wow, what a great style for women over 50." It's my Fashion Over 50: Pick of the Day because it solves so many fashion concerns of older women. And there's more good news: the Anne Klein dress is currently on sale, reduced from $118 to $69.99.

Little black dresses are often simple sleeveless sheaths. Some are cut straight, while others cling to a woman's curves. If you aren't tall, they can look boxy. And if you aren't thin, they can cling to all the wrong places. That's why I was so excited when I saw this Anne Klein dress. The high waistband, not quite an empire band, gives the garment shape. And the tailored peplum offers great stomach concealment. The short sleeves will hide less-than-perfect upper arms. And the open styling across the shoulders and front vertical neck slit are very feminine without exposing a huge amount of over 50 skin. The ruffle also is feminine.

MORE BLACK DRESSES
Needless to say, one little black dress style isn't going to flatter every over 50 woman. So I looked for a few more possibilities. The V-neck dress with the empire waist below is perfect for the pear shaped body. If you have a curvy body shape, the dress with the full skirt on the right might work. If you look good in boat-neck tops, I bet this dress would look wonderful. And a dress with lace is a great over 50 style. I threw in a couple of little black dress accessories as well.
